  • Why Fox News Called

    parenting resources

    Posted on August 9, 2012

This week, Delhi, LA, made major news. Delhi Charter School had a "pregnancy policy" about girls who were pregnant were asked to leave school and attend elsewhere or homebound study. Louisiana's state chapter of the ACLU got involved and threatened to sue causing a huge uproar. Local news featured stories on it and yesterday morning, Fox News called our office seeking information about the story. Exciting times:) School officials did not realize anything was wrong with the policy. This story seems to have confused some people because it got so huge overnight. The whole situation is unfortunate and at Life Choices, we strive to have open communication with pregnant teens who need help and support during such a difficult time.

We are currently in need of mentors for our HOPE program. This is at least a 2 hour weekly commitment. Our HOPE program is offered to anyone who has a positive pregnant test at the center and it is designed for 9 months of the pregnancy and first year of the baby's life. It's an "earn while you learn" set up where the moms earn what they need for their baby while learning valuable life and parenting skills. We have a curriculum mentors facilitate and the moms earn their "Mommy Money" which they are able to spend in our baby store. Call Carol at 323-2200 for more information or email at Carol(at)

  • Olympics and Sex Trafficking

    Posted on July 31, 2012

The Olympics are a show case of the world's strongest and best athletes in a range of sports. Every four years, all across the world, homes are iveted by the astounding display of athletic strength. However in Olympic Village, another side is sometimes displayed. Hope Solo, American soccer gold medalist, told ESPN magazine that she's "seen people having sex in the open.On the grass, between the buildings, people are getting down and dirty." Many argue this is a post competition stress relief as 100,000 condoms are delivered to the Village for the games but brings up a darker side of major sporting events.

Human trafficking is the 2nd largest global criminal industry, preceded by drug trafficking. Concern over the games in London stems from Europe being the largest destination for traffickers. In 2004, in Athens were prevention efforts were poor, the number of known human trafficking victims doubled.

Trafficked women are often forced to work over 16 hours a day and servicing more than 10 men a day. With the influx of visitors to London, demand for prostitutes and cheap labor will likely increase. has booths set up around London promoting awareness of sex trafficking during the games.

  • Meet Lyndsey Sikes

    Posted on July 3, 2012

Lyndsey Sikes is executive director of Life Choices. She has served as director since 2004. Lyndsey and her husband, Alex, live in Monroe with their bassett hound, Hamilton.

LC: What brought you to Life Choices?
I had just graduated from college and was approached about the job. After several months of prayer and consideration, I accepted and it's just been an adventure ever since.

LC: What do you love most about your job?
God has changed my life as much or maybe more than the clients we see. He relentlessly pursues us and to be a witness to such every day has impacted my life forever through the courage mothers have in today's world where the womb is a vulnerable place to be or the tears that flow when we share the Gospel, even a baby's heartbeat, so clear on ultrasound.

LC: What do you wish people knew about Life Choices?
Crisis pregnancy only touches a certain portion of people but standing up for pro life values is for everyone. In today's world, we can't take it for granted that someone else is doing something about it. It's up to us. When I first came to Life Choices, I realized how gray my generation is when it comes to moral choices but within a week as director, a client laid her brand new baby boy in my arms. Right then, it was very black and white for me. God has a plan for this life and every life and it's up to us to be a voice for those who don't have one.

  • Simple Things You Can Do to be Pro Life

With the Supreme Court upholding Obamacare, many conservatives are in an uproar. While some things are still up in the air, particularly as we face a very pivotal election this fall, maybe you would consider putting action to your values. This is a 3 part series showing up simple things you can do to be pro life.

    * Pray for pro life ministries. Prayer is powerful and we begin every day with prayer at Life Choices. Pray, not only for centers like us, but leaders and government officials making decisions for our country.

    * Offer your office skills. We always need help around our office whether it's stuffing newsletters or filing. There isn't a small job at the center as it all adds up to make a difference. Having a friendly voice answer the phone is the front line for someone seeking an abortion.

    * Wear a "Precious Feet" pin. Developed in 1976, the "Precious Feet" pin is the international pro life symbol. Over 5 million pins have been sold. They depict a baby's feet 10 weeks after conception and are an excellent conversation starter. Life Choices sells the pins for $1.
  • Meet Debbie Hutto

    Posted on June 26, 2012

Debbie Hutto is the office manager at the center and has been a part of Life Choices for 15 years. Debbie and her husband, Lonnie have 3 grown children and 2 precious granddaughters.

LC: What brought you to Life Choices?
God impressed on my heart I needed to do something in the pro life arena and I called and made appointment with Liz Sharplin, then director. I began as a volunteer then came on staff.

LC: Have pro life issues always been an issue close to your heart?
It wasn't something on the forefront of my mind but as I began to hear more about pro life issues through the media, it became an important issue to me. I've become more compassionate. I see people in difficult life circumstances I'd never seen before. I have learned to rely on the Holy Spirit more for words of wisdom and love for others.

LC: What do you wish people knew about Life Choices?
I wish more people knew the full scope of services we offer. We don't JUST offer pregnancy tests but teach parenting skills, mentoring and provide material assistance. Our clients learn so much from our HOPE program. I don't think many people realize all that is available.

  • What's Happened in China?

    Posted on June 12, 2012

Have you seen the graphic images recently of a Chinese woman and her aborted baby? Truly heart wrenching! On May 30, seven months pregnant, 23 year old Feng Jianmei was taken from her home and held for ransom. When her family couldn't pay, she was forced to have an abortion by lethal injection to the baby. Feng and her husband had failed to complete the paperwork for rural families to have a second child as they already had a 6 year old daughter. The graphic pictures began circulating the internet and international uproar ensued. Chinese officials are now admitting the abortion was illegal, according to the Daily Telegraph. Also ABC News is reporting Feng tried to commit suicide in the aftermath. According to MSNBC, three Chinese officials were relieved of their duties and an apology issued to the family. But surely this tragedy needs more than an apology. From Jill Stanek's blog, the Susan B. Anthony List is calling on President Obama to condemn China’s One-Child forced abortion/sterilization policy and to immediately cut off funding to the United Nations Population Fund, which helps facilitate China’s horrific family planning program. Both Presidents Obama and Clinton reinstated funding to UNFPA after Presidents G.W. Bush and Reagan cut it off. Under Obama’s watch the U.S. has given $145 million to UNFPA, and he has requested another $47 million in his 2012 budget. Stanek also notes vocal opposition from Obama may be slow to come, since China holds the largest share, 26%, of the United States’ $15.77 trillion debt.

Most notably silent on this story are abortion rights groups. There was no apparent outrage at Feng's lack of choice. With the PRENDA legislation bringing notice to sex selection abortion not just in the United States but in the world, let's be watchful and prayerful in this time.

  • Meet Carol Duncan

    Posted on June 12, 2012

Carol Duncan has been a part of Life Choices for almost a decade. She and her husband Tim are member of North Monroe Baptist Church and have four children and 10 grandchildren.

LC: What brought you to Life Choices?
I had a very strong need in my life to give back to God in some small way for all the good He has done in my life.

LC: Tell us about your job.
I am volunteer coordinator and office supervisor. I interview, train and work closely with volunteers. I act as a support person for the volunteers through encouraging and uplifting them on a weekly basis. They do so much and we appreciate their service to this ministry. Also in our HOPE program, I organize materials for mentors and train them.

LC: Is there anything else you would like someone to know about Life Choices?
My experience at Life Choices has enriched my life in ways I never thought possible. I've grown as a Christian so much.

And we are not talking about stumbling upon "soft porn" centerfold type images. Graphic and often violent sexual images are now easily accessed through any device connecting to the Internet. In the study of 563 teenage boys and girls, the study revealed the majority being exposed to explicit, graphic images. The article offers helpful advice to parents in navigating these difficult times.

The PRENDA act (Prenatal Non-Discrimination) was voted down in the House of Representatives last week. Even though there are many arguments on both sides about this act, one important thing to remember is sex-selective abortions are typically late term abortions. You usually don’t find out pink or blue until 18-20 weeks as a baby nears viability, so perfectly healthy babies are aborted because of sexism. We must strive to protect every unborn baby from abortion.

The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act passed through the Louisiana House and will be headed for Governor Bobby Jindal’s desk for signage into law. "Upon the signing of this bill by Governor Jindal, these unborn children will be spared from the pain of abortion and given the gift of life. Based on Louisiana statistics, we believe through a conservative estimate that at least 150 lives will be saved annually from abortion."

Louisiana will become the seventh state to enact such a protection, on the basis of substantial medical evidence, showing unborn children are capable of feeling pain at least from 20 weeks post fertilization.

  • Hear the Heartbeat

    pregnant monroe la

Posted on June 1, 2012 Hear the Heartbeat Act (SB 708) will require abortion facilities to make the unborn child’s heartbeat audible for the woman at least 24 hours prior to an abortion unless she requests and signs an opt-out form. Also, it improves the "Ultrasound Before Abortion" law by requiring abortion facilities to place the ultrasound screen in full view of the woman (she would still have a choice to look at the screen). It is a piece of legislation from the Louisiana Right to Life, headed up by Ben Clapper. The Act was drafted by the Bioethics Defense Fund.

Clapper said, “Abortion facilities exist to stop the beating of an unborn child's heart. The Hear the Heartbeat Act gives an otherwise voiceless child a voice through the playing of their heartbeat."

"With the heartbeat and ultrasound provisions in the Hear the Heartbeat Act soon becoming law, women will be empowered with more medical knowledge regarding their pregnancies within abortion facilities that have a financial interest in squelching this information."

At Life Choices, we have witnessed the power in the sound of a baby’s heartbeat and are excited about what this means for babies in Louisiana.

  • Sex- Selective Abortion in America

    Posted on May 30, 2012

    From the Live Action blog-

“The search-and-destroy targeting of baby girls through prenatal testing and abortion is a pandemic that is spreading across the globe,” notes Lila Rose, founder and president of Live Action. “Research proves that sex-selective abortion has now come to America. The abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, is a willing participant.” Six studies in the past four years indicate that there are thousands of “missing girls” in the U.S., many from sex-selective abortion. The U.K., India, Australia, and other countries ban sex-selective abortion, but the U.S., save for three states, does not. Today, Congress will debate the Prenatal Non-Discrimination Act (PRENDA), which would ban sex-selective abortions nationally.

“Planned Parenthood and their ruthless abortion-first mentality is the real ‘war on women’,” says Rose. “Sex-selective abortion is gender discrimination with lethal consequences for little girls.”

The complete, unedited video and transcript can be viewed at, a hub of research and information on sex-selective abortions. Live Action is a youth led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending the human rights abuse of abortion. They use new media to educate the public about the humanity of the unborn and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defenseless. More information at

The Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (SB 766), authored by Senate President John Alario (R-Westwego), passed the senate this afternoon. This act protects unborn children 20 weeks old based on the scientific evidence saying unborn children can feel pain at 20 weeks.

Benjamin Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life, said, "Currently in Louisiana, there is nothing to stop an abortionist from performing an abortion up until the moment right before birth. Through SB 766, we can protect an unborn child at 20 weeks and put a dent in the abortion-on-demand mentality advanced by the abortion industry.

"We commend Senate President Alario and the Senate for their action on this important piece of legislation. We encourage the House to expeditiously move SB 766 through towards the Governor's desk. Upon passage, we expect this bill to go into effect and save approximately 150 lives each year," Clapper finished.

Planning for Vacation Bible School is exciting and a wonderful ministry to the children. Thank you to everyone who works so hard at making each VBS a success. What an undertaking! But it's such a memorable time for each child.

Often during VBS week, there is opportunity to give to missions or local charities and Life Choices would be grateful to be considered by your church. Many churches use the week to take up change or baby items for the center, and this is a HUGE blessing for us. It is also a great ministry for kids because through change or baby items, they really feel like they are making a difference.

Life Choices has operated for 32 years from the kindness of our community. We are so blessed to be in an area that honors pro life values. Your support truly makes a difference.

In 2011, we saw 1,328 women and had 27 salvations and 28 babies saved from abortion. Baby items we often need are diapers (newborn and size 3 the most), wipes, bottle brushes, baby wash, diaper rash ointment, and clothing can be new or gently used. We provide a one time emergency assistance and also have a HOPE (Helping Others Parent Effectively) program for our clients to “earn while they learn” throughout their pregnancy. The baby items are set up like a store and our clients get “Mommy Money” for various things like going to their doctor appointments, attending church, making a budget, etc., and then they are able to spend what they earn on what they need for their baby in our store.

Life Choices believes you are worth waiting for because you are God's unique creation and His best plan is saving sex for marriage. It's not just a nice little thought. Saving sex for marriage gives you freedom to develop self respect, live out your convictions, enjoy building relationships, and begin a marriage on a foundation of solid trust.

At the center, we have a brochure with a headline,"If you think saying 'no' is tough, just wait 'til you say 'yes'." Wow. While saying no to sex outside of marriage is hard, saying yes to sex before marriage brings risk of pregnancy and disease, not to mention heartache. Condoms are not 100% effective against preventing pregnancy and not at all effective in protecting you from HPV, human papilloma virus.

Also it's important to remember if you have had sex outside of marriage, you can have a fresh start. Sometimes we get stuck on a path because we feel like we don't have another choice. You do! You can start over at any time. At Life Choices, we have resources to help you with making these decisions.

  • Signs of Hope Act

    abortion monroe

    Posted on July 10,2011

What an exciting week! At the last minute, we got word from our very own Frank Hoffmann, state representative and chairman of our board, Governor Bobby Jindal would be in town to sign his bill, the Signs of Hope act, into law. Signs of Hope is very important because a 2004 study shows 64% of women felt pressured into an abortion. This law requires a "Forced Abortion Prevention" sign to be conspicously posted in abortion clinics informing women that they can't be forced to abort against their will; the father is liable for support; adoptive parents may pay costs of prenatal care and childbirth; and there are many public and private resources to help during and after pregnancy as listed on a Department of Health and Hospitals website featured on the sign posted in the clinic.

In addition to being posted on the sign, the web address must be given by phone or email at the initial contact seeking an appointment. This legislation enhances Louisiana's current Woman's Right to Know law.

What a huge pro life victory! It was an honor to watch the governor sign this bill into law.

  • Louisiana Pro-Life Week

    Posted on June 30,2011

In 2009, the Louisiana legislature annually established the first week of June as "Louisiana Pro-Life Week". The highlight of the week is a reception hosted by Louisiana Right to Life at the Governor's Mansion, which honors pregnancy center and adoption agency directors, along with many pro-life legislators. This is the second year, my husband, Alex, and I were able to go. It is such a surreal feeling pulling into and parking at the Governor's Mansion. The staff is very kind and friendly, and it is interesting to see all the history at the home. I enjoy seeing the play set on the side lawn for the Jindal's three children as it's just a reminder that although important things are happening, it is still a family home.

The first year, Governor Jindal was unable to come because of the oil spill which had just occurred on the coast. This year though he was able to come over from the legislature session. We are very blessed in our state to have such a pro life governor, committed to traditional family values. We are also very grateful for Representative Frank Hoffmann, chairman of Life Choices' board, who is also committed to making Louisiana the most pro life state in the nation.
